Meriden at a Glance

  1. Meriden is a non-selective, independent school for girls from Kindergarten to Year 12. There is also a Prep School (4 years) for girls and boys.
  2. The size of our school (1,200 students) allows us to offer wide subject choice and an extensive range of cocurricular activities, while maintaining a steadfast focus on the individual student.
  3. Each year Meriden ranks among the top independent girls’ schools in the HSC. The results of our younger students in external tests far surpass the state average.
  1. We limit our class sizes to allow teachers to foster curiosity, initiative, perseverance and enthusiasm for learning. 
  2. As Meriden is a Christian school in the Anglican tradition, the values that are expounded in the Bible are promoted and modelled in the School, and form the basis of all decisions and interactions.  Girls from other faith backgrounds are welcome to attend Meriden.
  3. Meriden’s central location in Strathfield makes travelling from all areas of Sydney and surrounding regions convenient and direct.

I think one of the great things about Meriden is the friendships that extend beyond Year groups. I love the way that I can catch the train with a group of girls from Year 7 through to Year 12 and we tell stories, catch up with one another, and show interest in each others’ lives.

Meriden has provided me with numerous opportunities to develop my skills and represent my school through performance, and it is what I have learnt on stage that I am truly thankful to the school for. Through the major school productions, competing and training in Theatresports, competing in Festival of Speech and the many other times where I have been able to perform for my school, Meriden has given me a supportive and encouraging environment to learn and perform in.

Meriden encourages us to participate in the many sporting opportunities available at the school. As a result my sporting ability has developed.  I have since represented Meriden at numerous sports including water polo, javelin and diving. This in turn has led to sporting leadership opportunities opening up, including being selected as Diving Captain and as Cumberland’s Sports Officer. I really enjoy being a sports leader and role model for a healthy lifestyle.  The opportunity to participate in so many sports also helped me to complete the Sports element of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

There is something more about Meriden that is hard to define but is probably the most significant factor in our daughter’s success.  It is somehow wrapped up with the culture of the school, where each girl is fairly valued and is given opportunities based on her merit and enthusiasm.  There is little sense of an entitlement culture, rather, there is a refreshing level of transparency within the school and a sense of inclusion and fairness.

As part of our Year 9 Community Service project I visited Ti Tree in the remote Northern Territory.  Helping Indigenous children at Ti Tree School was a life-changing experience for me.  It showed me that I can make a positive difference in the world.

Meriden is a vibrant school with a strong emphasis on creative expression, both in and outside of the classroom. It has given me the opportunity to develop my own personal skills in many different areas of music, from composition and production to performance and analysis. The support between the students in our classrooms, in our ensembles and in our everyday lives is one of strong relationships built between a shared love of music and Meriden's dedication towards an environment of personal flexibility and creative self-expression.

The skills we learn when it comes to juggling school and sports training include an emphasis on time management and prioritising.   These skills enable us to continue to strive for and reach our goals.  As well as helping us to develop these vital skills, the teachers equip us with information and assistance for our future endeavours. Meriden is preparing us well for the future.
