Meriden hosts Remote Indigenous Education Forum

The Hon Bess Price MLA, Minister for Women’s Policy and Community Services for the Northern Territory, and Karla Grant, presenter of the SBS program Living Black were the keynote speakers at a Remote Indigenous Education Forum held at Meriden on 4 September 2014. Both women spoke of the positive implications that having access to quality education had played in their lives.

Hosted annually by Meriden, the Forum discusses issues relating to the education of young Indigenous women. Other speakers at this year’s event included, Zania Liddle, former Principal of Ti Tree School in remote Northern Territory; Tanisha Stanton, Program Manager for AIME, a mentoring program that assists Indigenous students through high school and into tertiary education and employment; and Erin Hunter, founder and Executive Officer of the Ngurra Jirrama Foundation.

There are currently five students from the remote Northern Territory studying at Meriden in Years 7, 8 and 11 as part of the school’s Indigenous Bursary program.
