Meriden secures seventh Australian Schools Tennis Championship title
17 November 2017
Meriden has claimed its seventh Australian Schools Tennis Championship title with a stand-out performance at the Albury Tennis Centre from 13 to 15 November.
Each year this tournament sees the rising stars of tennis from across Australia compete for the coveted national title. Every second year, the winning girls’ team and winning boys’ team go on to represent Australia in the World Schools Tennis Championship, an event that Meriden won in 2015.
Meriden entered two teams in this year’s National Schools Tennis Championships – Meriden Blue and Meriden White. Team members for Meriden Blue were Violet Apisah, Komaki Ido, Patricia Apisah, Jessica Stanmore, Emily Thomson and Zoe Tanti. The Meriden White team, which placed fourth in the tournament, comprised Angelina Teakaraanga-Katoa, Ellen Shanahan, Olivia Huang, Ayda Guler, Maya Haidari and Georgia Wu.
A gripping round of finals matches saw Violet Apisah win her match 6-1, 6-1. Komaki Ido’s match went down to the wire as she edged her way through in a third set super tie break. While Patricia Apisah, in the number three position, fought hard but could not match her opponent, Jessica Stanmore finished the singles with a straight sets win over the number four player.
With the doubles matches still to come, Meriden was up 3 matches to 1.
The doubles event saw the super sisters, Violet and Patricia Apisah, win their first and second sets. Not to be outdone, doubles partners Jessica Stanmore and Komaki Ido also claimed their first and second sets, earning Meriden a 5 – 1 score line and the title of the National Schools Tennis champions for the seventh time.
