Year 11 Meriden student, Carla Traplin, was crowned 2017 Local Sports Star of the Year at the Inner West Courier’s Sports Awards presentation on 2 November 2017.

As one of Meriden’s top Water Polo players, Carla has represented the school at state and national level including captaining the 2017 NSW team which won gold at the Australian All Schools Water Polo Championship earlier this year.

Carla was selected to the Australian All Schools team and travelled to Europe in July to represent her country in a series of matches against some of the world’s leading water polo players. Three other Meriden students, Inde Halligan, Hayley Ballesty and Brooke Mather, were also part of the Australian squad who toured Europe.

Carla is dedicated to her sport and believes that the key to success is teamwork. “The game is fast, intensive and competitive. The only way to succeed is by playing as a team. My team mates are like family,” she said.

Carla recently participated in a training camp with the Senior National Water Polo team at the Australian Institute of Sport. The training camp included workshops and intensive training sessions where she learnt the structures and systems that will become the building blocks of Australia’s campaign for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
