Meriden students to spend 2019 at top theatre companies

Year 11 students (L-R) Saffron McKeown, Freja Newman and Amber Broadbent

Three Meriden students have been offered places in youth programs run by Sydney Theatre Company, Belvoir Theatre Company and Griffin Theatre Company. The Year 11 girls will spend 2019 developing their passions for the stage under the tutelage of some of Sydney’s most celebrated performing artists.

Amber Broadbent has been accepted into The Sydney Theatre Company Young Wharfies Program, while Freja Newman and Saffron McKeown have each been offered places by two companies: Freja will be joining Sydney Theatre Company Young Wharfies Program and The Young Belvoir Theatre Club, while Saffron will attend The Young Belvoir Theatre Club and Griffin Ambassadors Program.

The year-long programs will allow the girls opportunities to attend the rehearsals and productions of each Company, meet industry professionals and participate in masterclasses led by artists on theatrical styles, playwriting, directing, programming and writing for theatre.

Amber, Freja and Saffron participate in Meriden’s performing arts program, which sees students build their skills and confidence front and backstage at productions in the School’s theatre, competitions and public performances.

Ms Sonia Byrnes, Drama Coordinator, said she was impressed by the students’ drive to continue to develop their performance experience through the external youth programs.

“Amber, Freja and Saffron showed enormous passion and creativity in putting together essays and videos to apply for the programs, which received hundreds of submissions,” she said.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the girls to see how large-scale productions are built from the ground up and to have seasoned theatre professionals mentor them through the process.”
