Term 1 2021 has been an epic success for Meriden athletes as their commitment to training during the competition lull of 2020 pays off.
Our girls burst back onto the inter-school sport scene with both skill and enthusiasm, taking out the top spots in the highly-competitive first division in IGSA Tennis, Water Polo and Badminton. Meriden’s junior players are also blazing a trail, taking out the top-tier Junior Badminton and Tennis competitions.
The sweeping wins come off the back of outstanding performances in Athletics, with the Meriden squad picking up ten medals at two recent championship events.
This term, Meriden Tennis players have once again dominated the Tildesley Shield Tennis Tournament, with Indiya McLeod finishing runner-up in the Singles finals.
The School’s Swimming and Diving Team is to be congratulated on their astonishing performance at the IGSA Swimming and Diving Championships, at which they improved on their 2020 ranking by four places to finish sixth overall at last week’s championships.
Mr Adam Raw, Director of Sport, said every student who participated in Sport this term made the School proud.
“The results speak to the skill and dedication of our students who show, time and again, that they are committed to their teams and that they will go the extra mile to ensure they are putting in their best possible performances,” he said.
“We see this at every competition with our athletes clocking better and better personal best times and distances, we see girls volunteering to step in to play up a grade to fill in for players who can’t make a game, we see it at lunchtimes in the school gym and on the courts of the Sports Centre as our students drop in for additional training sessions to improve their skill and strength. All Meriden girls have demonstrated their commitment and the results show. Overall, nine Meriden Tennis teams placed first in the IGSA tournament, as did two Water Polo teams, thirteen Badminton teams and one Volleyball team. Our girls are characterised by their grit, whatever their sporting ability, whatever their competition grade. We are very proud of their achievements and know we can look forward to more incredible results as participation in our successful sports programs continues to grow,” Mr Raw said.
