Meriden girls National Athletics Champions

National Triple Jump Champion Nakeisha Brimble with Coach Nicole Boegman-Stewart

Meriden’s athletes have taken Perth by storm at the Australian All Schools Championships and the National Nitro Schools Challenge, with two of our girls named National Champions. Ellen Murphy and Nakeisha Brimble proved they have bright futures on the track and field when they outperformed their peers nationwide.

It was an achievement in itself that Ellen Murphy, Year 8, qualified to compete in five events at the Australian All Schools Championships. On Day 1 of the competition, she took out silver in the U14 200 metre Track event. On Day 2, she helped the NSW team secure victory in the Relay event. On Day 3, she won gold in both the U14 100 metre Sprint and U14 80 metre Hurdles.

Nakeisha Brimble, Year 9, placed eleventh in the U16 Long Jump and was in second place leading into her last jump of the competition in the Triple Jump. With the pressure squarely on her shoulders, Nakeisha shattered her personal best by a massive twenty-six centimetres to win gold by just one centimetre.

Both Ellen and Nakeisha, under the direction of Coach Nicole Boegman-Stewart, have worked hard all season and thoroughly deserve their magnificent results.

Meriden’s Intermediate Athletics Team took out the top spot at the New South Wales Nitro Schools Challenge in September and travelled to the national finals this week to take on the best athletes in the country.

The event was live-streamed online and it was exciting to see the School get behind its team. Meriden was cheering for the girls as they took fifth place in the tough competition.

Congratulations to team members Karina Bell, Nakeisha Brimble, Milan Ji, Genevieve McKeown, Ellen Murphy, Abigail Omage and Amelie Sun on their amazing achievement.
