Meriden’s star athletes – students and coaches – have performed outstandingly at the country’s largest annual athletics event, the 2021 Australian Athletics Track and Field Championships.

Our students demonstrated their skill on the track and field, with many girls qualifying for multiple events at the four-day competition.

Year 7 student, Bronte Locane, marked her Championship debut by bringing home gold, silver and bronze medals. After placing third in the U14 Women’s 100 metre event, Bronte helped propel the New South Wales U14 Women’s 4 x 100 metre relay team to victory. Bronte also achieved a personal best time in the final U14 Women’s 200 metre event to claim the silver medal.

Karina Bell, Year 10, picked up two bronze medals and achieved two personal best performances in the U17 Discus and Javelin events. Establishing herself among the senior girls, Karina made it to the final of the Open Women’s Discus Throw, placing tenth overall.

Ada Rand, Year 10, placed first in her heat in the U17 800 metre event and placed sixth in the final, while Amelie Sun, Year 12, competed in the U18 800 metre event, placing sixth in her heat and twelfth overall. Audrey Sutton, Year 9, competed in the U15 Long Jump and Triple Jump events, achieving fifteenth and sixteenth places respectively.

The squad was heavy-hearted for its Captain, Nakeisha Brimble, Year 11, who sustained a hamstring injury prior to the Championships which affected her performance in the U18 Triple Jump event.

Athletics Head Coach, Mrs Nicole Boegman-Stewart, said she is proud of every athlete in the squad.

“It is an outstanding achievement to qualify to compete at this national level,” she said.

“For the girls to go on to the finals in so many events and to place at the top of their age groups speaks to the hard work they put in at training each and every week. I would like to congratulate the girls and thank our dedicated coaching staff who support them throughout the season and have helped develop their skill and their growth mindset.”

Meriden’s Coaches, many of whom are athletes of the highest calibre and active competitors on the athletics circuit, were competing in open age events at the Championships. Congratulations to Ms Charlotte Banks, Women’s Long Jump; Mr Ben Bishop, Men’s Steeple Chase; Ms Samantha Dale, Women’s Long Jump; Ms Tai Denicaucau, Women’s Hammer Throw; Mr Emmanuel Fakiye, Men’s Triple Jump; Mr Cameron McEntyre, Men’s Javelin; Ms Alexandra Petersen, Women’s Triple Jump; and Mr Sean Szlaek, Men’s High Jump.

The girls in Meriden’s Athletics Squad have now turned their attention to preparing for the IGSA Championships, which will be held in August.
