Year 12 student work at OnSTAGE HSC exhibit

Kate Jacobs on stage at the HSC Drama Showcase

Meriden has been delighted to learn that the Drama Major Work of Year 12 student, Kate Jacobs, has been selected to appear in the prestigious HSC Drama showcase, OnSTAGE.

Kate’s costume design work will join the best projects submitted by Drama students from across the state and will be on display in the foyer of the Seymour Centre, Sydney. Kate’s Major Work is a directorial vision of Ariel Dorfman’s Death and the Maiden.

Meriden’s Drama Coordinator, Ms Sonia Byrnes, said Kate’s work was inspired.

“Kate’s vision for this complex play was mature and inventive and her designs showed a beautiful understanding of theatre and how to work with character and symbol,” she said.

Kate said her aim was to create a multi-layered major work.

“My design is based on the interplay between archetypes of death and the maiden as representations of vengeance and forgiveness,” Kate said.

“The designs are inspired by South American art and culture, including La Calavera Catrina by Jose Guadalupe Posada; and Santa Muerte, Our Lady of Holy Death, who personifies death and, paradoxically, healing, protection and safe delivery to the afterlife. I was also influenced by the rising tide of female anger expressed by the #metoo movement, especially in relation to the recent violent attacks on young women at night.”
