A flourishing exchange program

Mrs Brown
Principal

Language learning is a vital element of a Meriden education. For a student learning a language, attending an exchange program overseas offers her an opportunity to accelerate and deepen learning and grow in her cultural appreciation.

As of 2025, Meriden is proud to offer exchange programs for all languages taught at Meriden, including French, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese.

There are many reasons why Meriden values exchange opportunities for Languages students.

  1. Undertaking exchange programs is associated with language development. Not only do students develop speaking and listening skills, but they also get to expand their vocabulary and appreciate cultural nuances.
  2. Cultural immersion fosters understanding and sensitivity. Students develop insight into customs, traditions and daily life of other cultures and an understanding of cultural diversity. Lived experience provides a deeper understanding than theoretical knowledge.
  3. Exchange experiences enhance personal growth. Research tells us that travel, especially when it involves communication in another language, is one of the best ways to develop self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment. It also helps to develop problem solving skills and promotes independence and self-reliance.
  4. There are many social benefits developed through exchange programs. Friendships formed with native speakers and other exchange students enrich the exchange experience and create lasting bonds. Students are pushed outside their comfort zone, helping them develop relational resilience.

When exchange students from overseas stay with Meriden families, they experience daily life at Meriden and receive a warm welcome into the Meriden community.

The school is delighted to see the partnerships with schools in France, Spain, China and Japan strengthen each new year, as they benefit all involved: students, teachers and their wider communitie
