Two events that usually mark the beginning of the school year at Meriden are the Year 7 Friendship Camp, and the Swimming and Diving Carnival.
I had the opportunity to visit Year 7 students at the Youthworks Conference Centre on the Port Hacking River in the Royal National Park. The girls were engaged in exciting activities, including sailing and dragon boating, and spent plenty of time getting to know each other. The camp was blessed with mostly fine weather and the girls returned on Friday of Week 3.
Last week, the Senior School and Junior School came together to contest the annual Swimming and Diving Carnival at SOPAC. It was fantastic to see many girls take the plunge and swim for their House and show their House spirit. This year was the first time ten Houses competed, with Cambridge, Lincoln, Norfolk and York joining the six established Houses.
A team of Meriden staff travelled to the Northern Territory last week to visit our partner schools in Ti Tree and Neutral Junction, as part of our City-Country Partnership via the Yadha Muru Foundation. Mrs Jenny Greenhalgh led the team which had a focus on literacy, music and wellbeing. It was great to reconnect with our colleagues, the community and the students after the Christmas break.
Upcoming Events: Week 6
There are several upcoming events which I would like to draw your attention to.
On Monday 3 March, the P and F will meet for their monthly meeting at 6:00pm in the Boardroom, Level 2 of the GCMD. All parents are welcome to attend.
On Wednesday 5 March, the year’s first Amadeus Concert will take place from 6:00pm in Wallis Auditorium. All members of the Meriden community are encouraged to come along and support some of our amazing musicians for an evening of excellent music.
On Thursday 6 March, Years 7 – 11 students will take part in the annual Fun Run at Bressington Park. Girls are to come to school in their PE uniform, including House shirt, at the normal time. Buses will take girls to the venue and return them during lunchtime. Normal lessons will take place after lunch. The Friends of Meriden Sport (FOMS) have requested assistance on the day, this may be through donations of food and drinks. Suggested food/drink donation items include:
- Doughnuts, muesli bars, cupcakes, brownies, friands, cookies, muffins, pies, tarts
- Sliced/chopped fruit (watermelon, oranges, apples, peaches etc.)
- Poppers/juice boxes (packs of six)
- Cases of bottled water
- Bags of ice
You can also help by volunteering on the day (from 8:30am to approximately 12:00pm) to help set up the table, sell goods, collect money and pack up.
Please contact Ms Mimi McLeod via email or SMS on 0421 991 613, if you are able to help in this way.
Finally, on Friday 7 March, Year 7 girls will travel to the Blue Mountains for a Geography excursion. More details will be communicated in due course. For now, please note that girls should arrive at school no later than 7:00am on the day.
