This week in Assembly I spoke to the Senior School girls about the ‘why’ of school uniform. There are several reasons that Meriden has a strict uniform policy, and it can be an adjustment for girls, especially those coming from other schools. At times girls will resist the uniform expectations or ask for individual modifications that create inequity in the school. Below are the reasons for why we uphold our uniform standards, which I articulated to the girls:

Uniform is a great leveller. The world is constantly giving the girls messages about what to wear and what not to wear, and wearing a school uniform provides the girls reprieve from these messages. It also prevents opportunities for comparison and bullying by not highlighting individual style choices and socio-economic status.

Wearing a school uniform provides a sense of belonging to a community. Uniforms remind students that they are a part of something bigger than themselves, and they join a long tradition of Meriden girls who have gone before as they put on their uniform each day. A uniform is a tangible reminder that the girls are connected to others in community, which is a powerful thing in an increasingly individualistic world.

There are also safety issues that have been considered in the design of a uniform. Whether it be sun safety provided by the wearing of the hat to and from school or limited jewellery to prevent items catching, there are a range of ways that safety has been considered in the design of a uniform. There is also significant research to suggest that having strong uniform expectations leads to less bullying and exclusion in a school community.

Most of the girls wear their uniform with pride and purpose each day and we are very thankful for this. If your daughter resists the constraints of the school uniform, please encourage her to not take these expectations personally and remind her that these rules are there for a reason and apply to all students. We appreciate your support in this.

If your daughter is confused about the uniform expectations, please refer her to pages 18 and 19 of the Student Planner or speak to her Year Coordinator.
