These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

– Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Parenting this generation presents unique challenges with increasing pressures on families, rapid technological changes, and shifting cultural values, leaving us with the question – how do we raise children who are confident, resilient, kind and well-grounded?

A few weeks ago, I was asked to reflect on how teaching has impacted my parenting. As I began this reflection, I found myself sidetracked by the many different types of parenting styles that exist. As a parent, I find it entertaining to explore the labels often attached to different parenting approaches – mindful parenting, helicopter parenting, gentle parenting and Pinterest parenting, to name just a few. Some of these styles make us smile, some make us a little uncomfortable, while others remind us of the importance of empathy, connection and thoughtful guidance. Whether we lean toward structure, freedom, or a little bit of both, these labels highlight a deeper truth – parenting in today’s generation is unlike any before, and it shouldn’t be the same. As society evolves, so too must our parenting. I parent my children differently from how I was raised, and I hope that one day my children might do the same.

Parents today are inundated with information on how to best parent. Technology and the internet now shape our approach more than ever, creating what could be described as a hybrid model of parenting advice, drawing from online resources, family and friends, and school partnerships. Conversations I’ve had with parents this term reinforce that while having a wealth of resources at our fingertips can be empowering, it can also feel overwhelming.

This term, we are thrilled to host Dr Jenny Brown, who will deliver a Parent Forum from The Parent Hope Project and the Confident Parent program. Dr Brown is a highly respected Christian family therapist, author, and parenting expert, with over 35 years of experience supporting families. She will share practical insights and strategies to help parents navigate the complexities of raising children in today’s world. Known for her expertise in understanding family dynamics, Dr Brown equips parents to foster healthy, connected relationships with their children and to navigate the teenage years with confidence and grace.
