Everyone Belongs
In Chapel last week, we reflected on an important idea: the difference between fitting in and belonging. Fitting in often asks us to change or minimise parts of ourselves to be accepted. Belonging, however, invites us to show up as we truly are – welcomed, valued, and seen. As we marked Harmony Day and its theme, Everyone Belongs, this message felt especially timely.
This idea came to life during Global Glam, our vibrant, student-led celebration of culture and identity. Students (and staff) walked the red carpet, modelling cultural dress and celebrating the rich diversity of our community. The range of participation, expression, and joy made the event deeply meaningful.
Belonging, of course, is not just a warm sentiment; it is foundational to student wellbeing. Research consistently shows that when young people feel connected to their school community, they experience stronger mental health, greater resilience, and increased engagement in both learning and relationships. A sense of belonging helps students feel safe, supported, and able to flourish.
Global Glam offered a wonderful example of this in action. All members of our community – those walking the red carpet, those cheering from the sidelines, students watching from the deck, friends sharing lunch together, staff dropping in to see the excitement, those announcing the parade, and those organising the event – each played a part in shaping the inclusive, celebratory atmosphere. Together, these many contributions created a living picture of what it means when everyone belongs.
As we continue through the year, our hope is that we nurture this spirit, creating spaces where every student feels known, valued, and truly at home at Meriden. Belonging is something we build together, and each of us has a part to play.
