This week has been Languages week in the Senior School. We kicked off the week with a Languages themed assembly and have had a week of activities run by the Language Captains Sarah Hall and Kitty Gai and the Languages Department. We were encouraged by the girls to think about how languages bind us together as humans, and how speaking other languages can be an act of kindness toward other. A huge thank you to the staff and students who have run these activities throughout the week.

Studying languages is far more than just an academic exercise — it is a powerful catalyst for lifelong cognitive growth. It is one of the most effective ways to strengthen and expand the brain’s neuroplasticity and executive functioning skills. Exposure to unfamiliar sounds, sentence patterns, and cultural contexts broadens neural networks, making the brain more adaptable and efficient. The cognitive workout provided by studying languages strengthens both short‑term and long‑term memory pathways, contributing to improved recall in other academic and everyday tasks.

More importantly, studying languages helps students to develop more empathetic awareness and cultural understanding. Students become more aware of the perspectives and experiences of other cultures, providing them with a rich inter-cultural understanding. This week has been a wonderful celebration of the diversity of our community and time of learning about each other’s cultural backgrounds.

At Meriden, we believe that every individual is uniquely made in the image of God, and that our God is a creative creator who intentionally designed us in all our diversity. As the girl’s study different languages, they are being exposed to the creativity of our Heavenly Father who made us each individually in his image.

It has been a full and purposeful term of learning this term. May the Lord bless and keep you this Easter. Reminding you of his infinite love for you in the sacrifice of his son.
