If you spend any time on the Senior School campus, it quickly becomes obvious that this is a student-led environment.
One of the things I love most about our assemblies, student chapels, and cocurricular groups is that it is the students’ voices we hear most often.
There is a deep sense of trust inherent in giving our young people these opportunities, both formally and informally, to lead their peers and take the ‘stage’ (sometimes quite literally).
What complements this environment so beautifully is that students are given structured moments throughout their high school journey to take positive risks. By stepping into interview environments, they are not just putting their hands up for unique opportunities; they are learning the invaluable skill of self-advocacy, finding their voice, and representing themselves with confidence.
Earlier this year, many of our Year 9 students underwent interviews as part of the selection process for their upcoming service camps. They advocated beautifully for why this experience is right for them, demonstrating their understanding of service, what they hope to learn, and how they plan to give back to other communities.
Similarly, our Year 11 students engaged in a nomination process to travel to our sister schools at Ti Tree and Neutral Junction. This immersion, taking place at the beginning of next term, is a vital part of our City-Country partnership.
Year 11 students Katherine Fanning and Gabriella Selim are currently serving on Strathfield Council’s Youth Advisory Board, established by State Member of Parliament, Mr Jason Yat-sen Li. This volunteer role recognises them as responsible representatives of their peers and the local community. During their meetings, Katherine and Gabriella actively engage in discussions and share ideas on the community issues they are most passionate about.
Most recently, students expressed interest in becoming representatives for their cohorts. After a thoughtful process of nominations and interviews, we were thrilled to announce our Student Representative Council (SRC) body, listed below. Led by our Year 10 representatives and guided by Mrs Tara Richards (Dean of Student Analytics), this group will propose initiatives, represent cohort perspectives, and raise concerns from the student body.
