This week, we celebrated Compassion Week, providing the girls with opportunities to explore what it means to understand others, show kindness and contribute positively to the world around them.
We began the week with Chapel services focused on compassion and our connection with the children we support through Compassion Australia. Drawing on Jesus’ example of loving and caring for others, the girls reflected on the importance of recognising the dignity, worth and potential of every person.
On Wednesday, our House Captains helped the girls learn more about the children our school sponsors through Compassion Australia. The girls learned about the children’s interests, as well as the countries in which they live and some of the challenges they experience. Through a strengths-based approach, they developed a deeper appreciation of our shared humanity and the ways in which compassion can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Developing Compassionate Students
Throughout the term, our Years 3 to 6 Class Captains have shared picture books with their classes and led thinking routines that encourage discussion and reflection. Under the guidance of Mrs Bowden, this initiative has provided valuable leadership opportunities for the Class Captains while helping the girls engage deeply with ideas of empathy and kindness. We are grateful to Mrs Bowden, our Class Captains and our teachers for prioritising these important conversations within their classrooms.
Through the Compassion Week experiences, our hope is that the girls are developing a deeper understanding of their capacity to make a positive difference in the lives of others. By encouraging them to look beyond themselves and connect with the wider world, we are helping them grow into thoughtful, confident and compassionate young people who seek to contribute positively to their communities.
For parents interested in continuing these conversations at home, Common Sense Media provides excellent recommendations for children’s books that foster empathy, kindness and compassion.
