Water Polo players on the up and up

6 August 2020

Meriden’s Water Polo athletes continue to rise: several of the School’s players, who are also members of the Olympus Program, have just been announced members of state and national squads.

Jasmine Higgs, Bronte Ryan and Nioka Thomas have been selected by Water Polo Australia to take part in the Launch to LA Youth Squad. The national squad has a number of planned training camps in September and October aimed at developing players for selection to the Australian side at the FINA Women’s Junior World Championships in September, 2021.

The camps coincide with Water Polo Australia’s State of Origin Series which will see teams from New South Wales and Queensland go head-to-head. Meriden student, Tara McManus, has been selected for the Born 2003 squad while Scarlett Deas has been selected for the Born 2004 squad. Both girls will try out for the New South Wales squad that will compete in the State of Origin.

Ms Chloe Wilcox, Head Water Polo Coach, said she is proud of the girls and their continued dedication to their sport.

“The Meriden students have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to continue train at school, whist club and state programs were on hold,” she said.

“They have utilised this time well and are committed to continuing to develop their skills in the water. We wish them the best as they showcase their abilities in their upcoming selections.”
