Yara and Vivian place first and third at Chinese Eisteddfod

Competition winners Vivian Chen and Yara Zhang

Six Meriden students have competed in the 2019 National Chinese Eisteddfod, with two students placing in the top three spots in their category. Yara Zhang placed first and Vivian Chen placed third in the competition’s 13-15 Years age group.

Congratulations to Yara and Vivian, Year 10, and to our other competition participants: Paris Chia, Year 9; and Jacaranda Zhu, Jasmine Cai and Fiona Van Der Meer, Year 10. All students spent weeks practising for the competition and each performed their personal best at the event.

The National Chinese Eisteddfod requires students to choose one poem from a selection of Chinese poetry. They must learn and recite the poems before an audience of judges and spectators. They are scored on their intonation, pronunciation, emotion and deportment.

The students who took part in the competition gained confidence and valuable experience in public performance and they also gained an appreciation for the nuances of Chinese poetry.
