Reconciliation Week

The Year 6 Creativity Team led National Reconciliation Week activities in the Junior School last week. The team members spoke to each class about the history of the week and encouraged students to think about how we can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The girls facilitated an engaging art activity based on the Sea of Hands art installation, with decorated cardboard hands symbolising solidarity with First Nations Peoples.

Our guest speaker was author and musician, Mr Gregg Dreise. Mr Dreise shared his Kamilaroi and Euahlayi heritage through storytelling, music, and dance. National Reconciliation Week culminated with the IPSHA NSW Indigenous Sport Round on Saturday, as each team acknowledged the traditional custodians of the land on which the games were played.

We were delighted to learn from the expertise of Mrs April Campbell and Mrs Cindy Presley, Elders from Ti Tree, when they visited Meriden in Week 5. Both women are talented artists and their art lessons with Year 4 enriched the girls’ understanding of the use of symbols for storytelling in Aboriginal art. Aunty April and Aunty Cindy helped Year 6 learn a song in language. We are grateful for the opportunities to learn and share ideas through our partnership with Ti Tree School.
