Reading is a foundation of education as it equips students to engage with all subjects. One of the delights of working in a Junior School is watching the girls develop reading skills through systematic teaching. The essential ingredients of effective reading instruction are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Our recent Book Week activities focused on celebrating the joy of learning to read in a literature-rich environment.
Young writers in the Junior School were inspired by visits from authors Kate and Jol Temple and Tristan Bancks, who shared their inspiration for writing and the processes they use to create stories. The Book Fair enabled parents and students to purchase quality literature to read at home.
The Book Week activities culminated with the Pre-K to Year 2 Book Parade. Girls in Years 3 to 6 also enjoyed dressing up as book characters and were entertained by the Jazz Band’s lunchtime concert in the playground. We are thankful for the Year 6 Library Team members who helped prepare Book Week.
JSA Father’s Day Breakfast
Hundreds of guests attended the JSA Father’s Day Breakfast last week. We extend our thanks to Mrs Julia Lee, JSA President, and the JSA Committee: Mrs Soomi Yang, Mrs Janet Kim and Ms Irene Chiu. The JSA Committee is supported by many parents who regularly attend meetings and support events such as the Father’s Day Breakfast.
Thank you to the volunteers who arrived early in the morning to set up and prepare the food.
