Pre-K students design 3D models of their favourite places

Meriden’s Pre-Kindergarten students have been learning about their local communities and are currently designing and building miniature versions of places that are important to them.

The project, which combines units of inquiry from Human Society and its Environment and STEM, will see students draw a map of their local community, then build a 3D model of the design. Teachers ensured girls had a good understanding of the features of their community by taking them on their first excursion: a special bus trip through Strathfield and Burwood.

As young children develop a sense of who they are and where they live, it is important to introduce them to their surroundings in purposeful and meaningful ways.

The girls are enjoying the sense of accomplishment they feel in recognising the features of their local communities and in mastering new creative, problem-solving and technological skills.
