Year 8 Student Selected as Young Archie Finalist

We are delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Year 8 student Joanna Yang, who has been selected as a finalist in the 2026 Young Archie competition, presented by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Being chosen for the Young Archie exhibition is a remarkable accomplishment. As the youth companion to Australia’s renowned Archibald Prize, one of the country’s most prestigious portrait awards, the Young Archie celebrates the creativity and perspective of emerging artists aged 5–18. With thousands of entries submitted from across Australia each year, selection as a finalist places Joanna among a small group of young artists recognised at a national level.

Joanna’s artwork is a deeply moving tribute to her grandmother, exploring themes of memory, identity and migration. Through delicate brown watercolour washes, she creates a soft, ‘faded’ aesthetic that evokes both the passage of time and the emotional resonance of lived experience.

Reflecting on her piece, Joanna shares:

“This artwork captures the nostalgic ache of missing home, a common experience for many immigrants who feel they have left their identity behind. It channels memories of a life once lived – bustling markets and friends that can’t be replaced. I used brown shades of watercolour to create a ‘faded’ look, symbolising both wear and resilience – traits that reflect my grandma. Through this portrait, I honour my grandma’s legacy and express her love for her roots.”

Joanna’s thoughtful approach and expressive technique beautifully convey both personal and universal themes, demonstrating a maturity and sensitivity beyond her years. Her work stands as a powerful example of how art can connect generations, preserve stories and honour identity.

As a finalist, Joanna’s work will be exhibited at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, providing her with the opportunity to have her portrait displayed in a professional gallery setting alongside one of Australia’s most celebrated art prizes.

We are incredibly proud of Joanna for this significant achievement. This recognition is a testament to her creativity, insight and dedication to her artistic practice. We congratulate her on this outstanding accomplishment and look forward to seeing her continued growth as an artist.
