As Meriden’s representatives on the Strathfield Youth Advisory Board, we had the privilege of visiting NSW State Parliament. The day provided a valuable opportunity to deepen our understanding of parliamentary processes, strengthen our public speaking skills, and engage in lively debate with students from other schools.
Developing Ideas Through Notices of Motion
We began by learning how to write a Notice of Motion, a formal document used to propose action on a particular issue. Working in groups of three, we each drafted our own motions on contemporary topics.
Katherine focused on legislation surrounding the ethical use of artificial intelligence, while Gabriella explored the role of AI within the education system. This exercise challenged us to think critically about current issues and consider how policy can shape society.
Debating Different Perspectives
Following this, we prepared for a series of debates. Remaining in our groups, we were assigned positions on pre-selected topics, often requiring us to argue perspectives different from our own.
Gabriella debated against the motion “Governments should not provide public funding for private schools”, while Katherine argued against “Gambling advertisements should be banned at sporting events.” Although challenging at times, the experience encouraged us to think both critically and laterally, while considering multiple viewpoints on complex issues.
Meeting the Premier
A highlight of the day was meeting the Premier of New South Wales, Chris Minns, who shared insights into how students can begin pursuing an interest in politics and public service. His reflections provided an inspiring perspective on leadership and civic engagement.
Looking Ahead
Overall, the experience was both rewarding and inspiring. Being in the parliamentary chamber and gaining firsthand insight into its operations was truly memorable. We look forward to continuing our involvement in the Strathfield Youth Advisory Board and building on the skills and experiences gained during this visit.
