Year 9 students have had the wonderful opportunity to participate in Service-Learning Afternoons, visiting a range of local schools, preschools, and community organisations. Through these experiences, students engaged meaningfully with the wider community while developing a deeper understanding of service, empathy, and responsibility.
Supporting Our Youngest Learners
Several students spent their afternoons at Meriden’s Lingwood campus, supporting both Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students. Students assisted Pre-Kindergarten teachers in the Starfish, Turtle, and Dolphin classrooms, helping with activities, reading stories, and preparing classrooms at the end of the day. The younger students eagerly welcomed their older counterparts, inviting them into games and conversations. The Year 9 students enjoyed working alongside children as they completed learning activities, including colouring projects based on books they had recently read in class. For some students, the visit was particularly special, as they returned to classrooms they had once called their own. The experience highlighted the patience, care, and dedication required when working with young children, leaving students with an even greater appreciation for the work of their teachers.
Another group visited St John’s Preschool in Ashfield, where they assisted with gardening, organising resources and engaging with children through play and learning. Activities ranged from imaginative pirate games and craft projects, to reading stories and sharing conversations. The joy and laughter shared throughout the afternoon served as a reminder of the impact that even small acts of kindness can have.
Building Connections in the Community
At Chalmers Road Public School in Strathfield, students spent time building connections with younger children during lunch and playground activities before joining them in classroom lessons. Working in pairs, the Year 9 students supported a variety of learning experiences, including developing fundamental movement skills through games and practical activities. Seeing the children’s growing confidence and pride in their achievements made the afternoon especially rewarding.
Lifelong Experiences
Across all service placements, students gained valuable insights into the importance of generosity, patience, and community engagement. They discovered that service is not only about helping others but also about building relationships, learning from different experiences, and developing a greater appreciation for the people who support our communities every day. While the Service-Learning program has now concluded for the year, its impact will continue well beyond these afternoons. The experiences have encouraged students to grow in compassion and confidence, while fostering a lasting commitment to contributing positively to their communities.
