Growing in Character and Compassion

Across Years 7, 9 and 11, Meriden’s Pastoral Program provided students with opportunities to grow in empathy, resilience and self-awareness. Through experiences ranging from leading Chapel and exploring important social issues to developing healthy habits, students were encouraged to strengthen their relationships, reflect on their own wellbeing and contribute positively to the wider community.
Year 7: Care and Compassion in Action

Recently, Year 7 led the School in Chapel, with a service centred on the theme of R U OK? Day. Throughout the term, students thoughtfully prepared messages exploring how we can look to the Bible and to Jesus as we care for and support one another.

A Year 7 choir was formed for the occasion, performing alongside a band made up entirely of members of the cohort. Students also showcased their creativity through a drama performance demonstrating practical ways to show empathy and support others. Drawing on learning from the Pastoral Program, they applied their understanding of responding to difficult situations in an authentic and meaningful context.

Two Year 12 Prefects were interviewed during the service, sharing insights into the importance of prayer, encouragement and compassion when supporting those in need. Together, the Bible readings and prayers reinforced the message that caring for others is central to a strong and supportive community.

The students involved demonstrated remarkable commitment and maturity throughout the preparation process. Their leadership reflected the values of empathy, courage and service that continue to shape the Year 7 experience.

Year 9: Developing Social Awareness Through Literature and Service

Year 9 students participated in the Pastoral Reading Program, exploring themes of empathy, connection and social responsibility through Pip Harry’s novel Because of You. The story’s focus on youth homelessness encouraged students to reflect on social issues, community support networks and their own Service-Learning experiences.

Students also had the opportunity to hear directly from Pip Harry during an engaging author talk. She spoke about her experiences volunteering at a homeless shelter in Darlinghurst and facilitating creative writing workshops for marginalised communities, highlighting the impact of service and human connection. Students gained valuable insight into both the writing process and the ways in which lived experiences can inspire meaningful storytelling.

Inspired by these conversations, Year 9 students will soon put their learning into action through Share the Dignity’s It’s in the Bag campaign. Each Tutor Group will assemble care packages containing essential items for women experiencing hardship, providing a practical opportunity to translate empathy into meaningful service.

Year 11: Preparing for the Future

As Year 11 students prepare to enter their final year of schooling, the Pastoral Program has focused on developing practical strategies to support wellbeing, self-management and personal growth. Students explored the role of dopamine in habit formation and considered evidence-based approaches to establishing routines that support both academic success and personal wellbeing.

The program also provided dedicated opportunities for one-on-one mentoring conversations with Tutors. These discussions encouraged students to reflect on their goals, wellbeing and commitments while strengthening relationships with staff and building confidence in communicating openly about their experiences and aspirations.

A further focus was the development of an outward mindset, encouraging students to look beyond their own perspectives and consider the needs, challenges and goals of those around them. By recognising the impact of their actions on others, students developed a deeper understanding of empathy, collaboration and community-minded leadership.

Putting these principles into practice, the Pastoral Committee created a wall of encouragement for Year 12 students ahead of their HSC examinations. The initiative reflected Year 11’s growing commitment to supporting others and contributing positively to the School community as they prepare to step into leadership next year.
