The Meriden Big Band took to the stage at a packed Lazybones Lounge, delivering an electrifying performance as part of The Tuesday Night Jazz Orchestra residency. Taking the stage in this live jazz venue, the Meriden Big Band delivered an exciting range of jazz and funk standards, living up to the venues promised byline of “extraordinary music by exceptional musicians”.
The Band displayed impressive skills across a range of styles, from slow, soft ballads to raging funk, performing Big Band favourites by composers such as Herbie Hancock, Count Basie and Buddy Rich. Many of the students featured as improvising soloists, demonstrating the leadership, resilience and courage required to step out in front of the band and play in a room full of peers and professional musicians.
Directed by Ray Cassar, and featuring special guests James Watson on bass, Tim Walsh on trombone and Will Henry on saxophone, the Meriden girls showcased an energetic and stylish performance developed through hours of practice, weeks of rehearsals and a deep dedication to their ensemble and to the art form.
Congratulations to Rebecca, Anne, Chloe, Grace, Smya, Abigail, Veronica, Kara, Catherine, Alice, Lily and Aanya on a great night of fabulous music and excellent ensemble work. It was wonderful to see the students’ hard work and dedication recognised through their selection to perform at this event. We are pleased to announce that the Meriden Big Band will be returning to Lazybones Lounge in 2027.
