Meriden badminton players have continued to achieve outstanding success, representing their state and territory with distinction at the Australian Under 15 and Under 19 National Championships, before backing up their performances with impressive results at the NSW Autumn Open.
Several students earned selection to representative teams, competing for NSW and the ACT in the National Team Championships. Among the highlights, Isabelle (Year 10) helped the NSW Thunder Under 19 team secure a silver medal, while Kerry and Emily (Year 8) were also part of the NSW Thunder Under 15 team that finished runners-up. Angelina and Ella (Year 10) represented NSW Lightning in the Under 19 competition, achieving a strong fourth-place finish, while Jade (Year 8) proudly represented the ACT Under 15 team.
The championships featured many memorable moments. Angelina contributed to an emphatic 8-0 victory over the ACT Under 19 team and helped NSW Lightning secure a thrilling one-point win over Queensland, with the match ending 4-4 before NSW claimed victory on points, 300-299. Jade also played an important role in the ACT team’s victory over Western Australia, helping secure a sixth-place finish.
Strong Individual Performances
The National Individual Championships provided another opportunity for Meriden players to showcase their talent. For several students, this was their first experience competing in the highly competitive Under 19 division.
Ella delivered one of the standout performances of the tournament, defeating a current national representative in a tightly contested singles match. Isabelle enjoyed an exceptional championship across all three disciplines, reaching the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles while recording victories over several Australian representative players.
In the Under 15 competition, Kerry continued her strong form, reaching two quarterfinals and the Round of 16 in singles. Partnering with Emily in doubles, the pair progressed to the quarterfinals before narrowly missing a semifinal berth in a closely fought three-set match. Emily also impressed with a quarterfinal appearance in singles.
The students’ achievements reflect the dedication and commitment they have shown throughout the year and highlight the growing strength of the Meriden badminton program.
Success Continues at the NSW Autumn Open
The success continued at the recent NSW Autumn Open, where Meriden players again recorded excellent results. Angelina claimed the B Grade Doubles title and reached the semifinals in A Grade Doubles, while Ella was a semifinalist in A Grade Singles. Emily also enjoyed a strong tournament, finishing runner-up in A Grade Singles and reaching the semifinals of the Open Grade Singles competition.
