Year 8 students recently explored the fundamentals of debating as part of a Communication Workshop. The session introduced students to the key elements of competitive debating, including speaker roles within a team and the concept of MMM (matter, method and manner), the framework used to assess the effectiveness of an argument.
A highlight of the workshop was a live demonstration debate presented by members of the Year 9 Archdale Debating Team. The Year 8 students were invited to step into the role of adjudicators, applying their newly acquired knowledge to evaluate the speakers’ matter, method and manner in real time.
The workshop provided a valuable hands-on introduction to debating for our Year 8 students, while also giving the Year 9 debaters an opportunity to refine their skills before a live audience. It was a wonderful example of students learning from and supporting one another across year groups.
Junior Secondary Speaking Award Success
Congratulations to Kaitlyn (Year 8), and Alice (Year 10), who recently competed in the Local Final of the Junior Secondary Speaking Award (JSSA).
Both students delivered outstanding performances in the prepared and impromptu speaking sections of the competition. Their confidence, poise and speaking ability earned them first place in their respective Local Finals, an exceptional achievement.
Kaitlyn and Alice will now progress to the Regional Final later this term. We congratulate them on their achievement and extend our best wishes as they continue to represent Meriden in public speaking competitions.
